ICE: You’re Not Welcome in the South

Last week, I dropped my kids off for their first day of school in our small Alabama town of not even 7,000 people. The kids were excited, but I was a nervous wreck. My kids — ages 8 and 11 — are my heart and joy. Would they have everything they need? Like every dad, my mind raced through a million scenarios. My oldest is starting middle school. What haven’t I anticipated? What might come up and wreck his whole day, setting the tone for the school year? None of these came close to what families faced just a few hours west from us on their first day of school. In Scott County, Mississippi, 65

Race is a Social Construct, But It Still Matters

When I teach about race in sociology classes, I often begin by asking students how and when the idea of race came about. Lesson one? Race is not a biological reality — it’s a social construct. That doesn’t mean there’s no biological basis to it at all — anyone can tell the difference between different skin tones and understand the role genetics play in passing on traits. However, if you were to try to divide the world into discrete racial categories based on genes, you couldn’t. Where, exactly, in North Africa would you draw the line between black people and white people? Where in Central A

Candidates Need a Moral Vision

“Yes we can,” went Barack Obama’s presidential campaign slogan, inspired by labor rights activist Dolores Huerta . After mass shootings killed 31 people in Texas and Ohio , I can’t help but recall how those three words — “yes we can” — encouraged hope and unity. Nearly 11 years after Obama’s historic election, however, it seems like we’ve been set back four centuries. Over just two years , Donald Trump’s racist and hate-filled rhetoric has influenced a rise in white nationalism and domestic terror, inspiring people like the El Paso shooter to drive 10 hours to kill “as many Mexicans as

American white male misery is real

A CNN profiler was speaking about the El Paso shooting, on Aug. 6, in which 22 people were murdered by an angry white man. She blamed the killer"s sense of white privilege. Mass murder carried out by white, young men, the "analyst" was saying, occurs because these young men cannot adjust to a changing society. They cling to the way things were, when the country was predominantly white. In other words, the oppressor in these young white men wants to continue to oppress. When whites commit unspeakable acts of violence, it is said to only ever come from a place of power and privilege. When b

Public schools to incorporate LGBT people into history

(EDUCATION VIEWS) – An Illinois law requires public schools to incorporate information about the "roles and contributions" of LGBT people when teaching American and state history. Trump Rule Targeting Poor Immigrants Could Harm Children, Health: Advocates

A Trump administration plan to cut legal immigration by poor people will likely result in sicker children, more communicable diseases and greater homelessness in the United States, according to immigrant advocates and the federal government's own analysis. Under a rule unveiled this week, the administration can reject applicants for temporary or permanent visas if they fail to meet high enough income standards or if they receive public assistance such as welfare, food stamps, public housing or Medicaid. Legal immigrants are already refusing services they are legally entitled to, whether from

O’Rourke Tries to Explain Why He Won’t Drop out of Presidential Bid to Run for Senate, Despite Dismal Polls

Former Congressman Beto O'Rourke (D-Texas) announced that he is not considering dropping out of the presidential race to run for Senate again. O'Rourke has been struggling to break through on the national stage, despite a strong entry into the race. Since his initial presidential announcement, via Vanity Fair , O'Rourke plummeted in the polls, often struggling to earn more than 1%. He's also struggled to stand out during the crowded Democratic primary debates. Because his presidential bid has been less than inspiring, many have hoped he would reconsider his senate bid.
